DYI Renewing a Bench and Spool
We have a a bench that sat on the deck for the past 10 plus years. It is made from teak wood but is looking worn and mossy. I have been wanting to give it a face-lift for some time. We also have an ol' wooden spool that has been sitting behind our shed for at least the same amount of time. I wonder how it has survived the Nova Scotia weather all this time. I wanted to do something with it as well. Many ideas crossed my mind, (all from perusing Pinterest) but decided on a table because other than the store bought furniture on the patio there is nothing else to use as a table.
I got both of these items and hauled them into the front of the house and near the garage so we could store them in between working sessions.
David (my husband and re-purposing partner, has all the supplies to get started. He dug out from the dredges of the garage 100 gauge sandpaper, his means 100 grains of sand per sq inch. We also found some clean paint brushes and filler for the deep holes in the spool.
Below is a photo of the mossy bench. You can see the green organic material (Moss) built up on the legs.
The spool photo is a sanded picture. Hey, I have no idea how Theo photo bombs my pictures.
It takes a bit of time to sand the wood but a needed step.
I love the colours. They really complement the yellow siding and gives a Floridian feel to the patio.
This bench has an etched rose in the centre. It received a bleeding heart colour to match the table. A little green was added to the stem of the flowers to incorporate the bench colour.
We bought one quart for each piece of furniture. The wood was very dry and it was needed. The flowers were painted free hand but think a stencil would work just as well.
The best thing about this project is the bright new colours on the patio and that it is a completed project which was done before the summer was over so we could enjoy it.
Dog Wisdom/Rover Revelation for today: As you can see I have loads of patience for you, please have loads of patience for me, other animals and your human family, friends and heck all creatures.

We went to Kent Building Supplies and chose a couple of paint colours for the bench and table.
I picked an in between of surrounding sea and for my eye I thought it was too dramatic. Bleeding Heart for the table was left full colour. We painted the bench with surrounding sea and table bleeding heart.
I also added a few flowers on the table to give it some pop and take away from all the pink which seemed a touch overwhelming. This bench has an etched rose in the centre.
