Jam Making with Grand Daughter
We had a little get together 2nd of July, 2018 to celebrate my retirement from nursing. My daughter Julia, dropped in with salads and treats. Hubby, David, barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs. My youngest son Aaron and his girlfriend Rae-Ann brought several boxes of strawberries from The Valley.
In Nova Scotia the Annapolis Valley Region includes Annapolis County, Hants County and Kings County. Rae-Ann has family in Kentville which is included in the region where the strawberries are from. Strawberries are big business in The Valley. Another time we could review wineries in The Valley, but will stick to the strawberries for now.
We ended up making strawberry shortcake with store bought biscuits and whipping cream but there were plenty of berries left over.
The next day my grand daughter, Taylor and I made strawberry freezer jam with a package of Club House Freezer Jam gelling powder which was suggested by Rae-Ann. I had never used this before. It was always another common gelling brand.
The recipe called for 4 cups of mushed strawberries and only 1 1/2 cup of sugar. We followed the package directions and ended up with 3 jars of jam. It was wonderful making this with Taylor as the directions were easy to follow for her and the jam gelled up nicely. We didn't use a lot of sugar and the jam is tasty.
It does taste a wee bit different from another pectin brand I have made in the past. I think the difference is less sugar. Having success at making jam with my grand daughter was perfect. Even the time it took was minimal.
There have been times the more sugary freezer jam from the other brand would not seem to set up. I am glad we had no trouble that way. For the first time jam session with a grandchild I would go with Club House. Simple, less sugar and successful. What more could you ask for.
Dog Wisdom for today Each post will come with a little lesson learned from being a dog owner. A rover revelation if you will. Something we humans learn from Dogs. "Doing a stretch when waking is a good thing. I really do a downward dog stretch as soon as I wake"
